This is part of a series of HispanicBusiness.com exclusive reports from the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado.

DENVER--New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said he would like to have "influence" in a potential Barack Obama administration.

With Sen. Joe Biden named the vice presidential running mate, and thus no longer a competitor for a potential Secretary of State job should Obama win, Richardson, a former Ambassador to the United Nations, could be a potential choice for the cabinet post.

"That would be hard to turn down," Richardson said at a pool party for his home state delegation on the top of the 6th floor of the Crowne Plaza Hotel here.

"I'm happy where I am," the second-term governor said. Term limits will force Richardson out of the governor's mansion in January 2011.

Richardson looked happy. His beard grown in, his hair longer and curling a bit in the back, he worked a meandering receiving line of sorts for more than an hour, skipped a planned speech and then settled in at a table of women -- one former aide and several state lawmakers.

The event, which featured the governor's favorite -- cigars -- was mostly New Mexican and Colorado politicos. The only other national elected figure attending was District of Columbia Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton.

Why the New Mexico party I asked her?

"I love 'em," she said, "Bill Richardson's my main man."
